Crate Killaz - The NZ Dubplate Story

2nd April 2008 @ 9:00am

Crate Killaz is the first release of its kind in Aotearoa - a collection of dubplates from New Zealand reggae crews that spans a generation of sound-system culture from the North to the South.

In dancehall culture, Dubplates are exclusive versions of a song.  Originally a one-off acetate version of a tune, voiced or mixed exclusively for a particular sound-system, now dubplates are usually burnt to CD or encoded as mp3, but are still exclusive voicings or mixes.  Traditionally they have been used by sound-systems to compete against each other in sound clashes.

Crate Killaz reflects the diversity that exists in sound-system culture throughout New Zealand.  Beginning with a dub recorded in 1995, and ending with one recorded in 2007, this release brings together key sound-systems, highlights the history and development of the music and signals the way forward for an ever-growing scene.  It is a testament to the endurance and strength of purpose that exists in reggae in Aotearoa, with every contributing sound-system bringing energy, innovation and vision to the music and the movement.

Crate Killaz was compiled and mixed at More Fire Studios in Wellington, NZ by Jnr Ranks - original Dancehall Dons founder and  longtime player in the NZ scene.

The More Fire label has at its heart, a philosophy of fostering the relationship between artist and producer, which is essential in making good reggae and dancehall music.  The label draws heavily from the rub-a-dub style of deejaying and believes that a good riddim has potential above and beyond one song.

As stated by Jnr Ranks:

'It was important to me that everybody that is involved in dubplate culture in New Zealand was asked and given the opportunity to submit something. Through my work in the scene over the years, I just happened to be in a prime position to approach the various sounds to secure their commitment and it's that commitment that has made this compilation as comprehensive as it is. I see the release as both a milestone and a virtual anthology of kiwi sound clash culture.
We can only hope it will inspire the next generation to keep the fire burning".

Crate Killaz available now through NiceUp for $20 NZD + postage. Email info@niceup.org.nz for further details
