Mastadon Studios

The Mastadon label is new to Wellington city and is the creation of long-time selector, Spin Zero, from the Yardwise Crew.  It is primarily involved in music production, from recording, arranging, mastering and pressing.  Mastadon creates and records music of any style but it's vision at present is set on the promotion of exclusively conscious reggae and reggae-related music.  Mastadon Sudios has recording capabilities for any instrument that collaborators wish to play.

The Mastadon sound is conscious, rootsy and irie and gains inspiration from lazy horn lines, solid bass, well-constructed chord sequences, crystal production and quality.

The label takes on a heavy, forward-moving, conscious, 'trodding' ethos - working steadily and moving patiently.

The most recent project for Mastadon has been the mastering of the first Empress Sounds mix-CD, which was brought out in March 2008.  Following on from that, the first Mastadon compilation - 2008 Ital Mix - has just been released and represents a selection of smooth grooves from the 70s up to the present.

When asked for some up-coming reggae picks for the next part of 2008, some mentioned highlights were: more sound-clashes, Empress Sounds sessions, Aotearoa productions and Crate Killaz 2 - original dubplates.

So far the label has been promoted solely through word-of-mouth, but will expand when time allows.  Stay tuned for an EP, featuring all-original Mastadon productions, planned for release in the later part of 2008.
