Booyah 2, Friday 1 February @ Aqua Velvet Dancehall, RAGLAN.
Laying down the monster sounds of Reggae, Hip-Hop and Jungle - Featuring DJs Flex, Grizzly Smooth & Jamin-I - and lyrical lioness, Jinja Jamboo - plus guests.
A
diverse group gathered on this sultry Friday night for BOO-yah! A triple
showcase of local talent, Grizzly Smooth, Jinja Jamboo and Jamin-I wowed the
party people, with DJ Flex, the worldwide wanderer, on homeground connecting
with the Westcoast raggamuffin massive .
Grizzly Smooth kicked off the session with a blend of sharp, contemporary Jamaican Reggae and Hip-Hop, two genres increasingly melded together in Caribbean dancehalls. He rounded off the set with his own stirring remix of Burning Spear's Jah Nuh Dead, sung by Sinead O'Connor and laid over a warbling Jungle riddim.
Then the ever-smiling Jamin-I produced a stream of crowd-pleasers, as well as some strident Hip-Hop sounds. Tanya Stephens It's A Pity got everyone worked up at the prospect of seeing her perform at the upcoming Soundsplash Festival in the neighbourhood Reserve. Yeah!
Jinja Jamboo, the inspired and
innovative rapping sista leapt up to the mic, treating us to her latest
creations of conscious lyrics, syncopated rhythms and improvised sound effects.
She pulled off some slick B-Girl dance moves and hyped all crew with her
effervescent styles and her brand new song, shi-BOOM!
There was just enough time for a free-flow open mic session before DJ Flex took over the decks, spinning a
wide variety of tunes, from Jungle to Drum & Bass, to fresh Baile Funk &
Baltimore Club, and then back into Reggae pop hits. A rollercoaster ride and
the dancefloor lovers were freakin on it, with smoke machine pumping thick and
body-rockers bouncing the stage. His skills and on-stage agility certainly suited
his name.
All in all, BOOYAH 2 was an
energetic, fun night of rocking innovation and positive vibes. The $10 door
charge was the best money I've spent in a long time. shi-BOOM!!
