From Jamaica with love - Ganja Selection - VP Records/Hardwax (2007)
The crew at Hardwax have put together a compilation of some of the greatest ganja praising tracks from the 1970's through to today's classics. Much respect for including Mikal Rose's Stalk of Sensimilla, which always sends shivers up my spine - a fine version indeed! Also Capleton's righteous tune Chalice, and Barrington Levy's dancehall anthem, Under mi Sensi.
There is a good selection of fine reggae vocalists with Jacob Miller's 1975 hit, Tired Fi Lick Weed Inna Bush, and representing contemporary vocalists Richie Spice with his hit, Marijuana, and Sizzla with Got It Right Here. I'm also buzzing on the dubbed out tune Don't Smoke the Seed by Frankie Jones. Irie Vibes, Sweet sensation, Light up the Sensi,What a smooth meditation!
With 19 tracks from various artists and era's, Ganja Selection gives a good overview of the interconnectedness of Reggae, Rasta, and the Sacred Marijuana plant. It has lots of solid tunes within which most people will be able to find a favourite ganja tune to sit back and roll up the high grade.
Like Lee Perry sings -
Instead of hate and malice,
You
should be sipping chalice,
And giving praises to His Most High Jah Jah
Rastafari.
Free up the Weed!

One disappointment with this album. The tracks are good, but most of them fade and finish after about three minutes and fifteen seconds of play, despite how long the origional tracks actually are. I personally would like the tracks to be the original length, especially the catchy ones like Anthony B's "Low Di Herb". Total play time on the CD is about 70 minutes, but seems like these Hardwax guys are just "Hustling it" and they cut some of the tracks short to fit more on the CD. So this is a bummer.
