Ghetto Red Hot, 28 July @ Tupelo, WGTN.
Oh yes. GRH III proved yet another memorable night delivered by the Rhys B-Art-Kerb combo (three amigos you don't wanna miss), complete with a red-hot dancing girl in red-hot boots and topped off by the international icing on the dub cake, Spikey Tee.
Whenever you wake up with a song in you head and then hear it played out you just know the night is going to be blessed. For that I must thank Rhys B for his mixing in of the Rockers classic, Tenement Yard.
Mr B's seemingly short but glorious set succeeded a mighty one from Art, which was sadly delivered to a pretty much empty dance floor. Frustratingly, in true Wellington style people arrived late and warmed up slow.
Kerb stepped up next for a fine set representing the sisters of dancehall with plenty of dope lady MC'd tunes, prepping his bad self for a track-long scratch.
Up popped Spikey Tee to dub it out for a while UK styles to an appreciative crowd. He played a mammoth and eclectic set, knocking my socks off with some of his smooth rootsy lyrics over some witty 7-inch tricks. That man can surely multi-task.
It was hours before Spikey came up for air to hit the dance floor, leaving Art and Kerb to tussle it out, busting tunes both naughty and nice to keep the hardened ones up and dancing till the wee hours.
Congrats to the NiceUp crew for bringing us this one and props to all who made it down to Tupelo for the nicest dance floor I've seen this winter - despite the bar running out of tequila, the UGLY scenes in the girls' room and yes, a street fight.
I'm sure I won't be the only one hanging out for a GRH IV. Good thing I’m amongst the first 50 who sorted our shiznit and made it down in time to pocket Art Official's five star promo CD. Nice.
