Jesse Jahmal - The Peoples Sound Mix

Jesse Jahmal - The Peoples Sound Mix (2009)

The Peoples Sound - Mix Tape Vol. 1
is the first in what must be intended as a line of mixes from expat selector Jesse Jahmal aka DJ Jumble, now resident in Melbourne. Jesse seems to have cemented himself nicely in the Melbourne scene, playing pre-eminent dances such as More Fire and building up a strong reputation with the city's reggae heads.

The mix definitely has a roots vibe, covering a lot of eras but mostly focused on the last decade or so. The mix kicks off with a couple of tunes on one of 2006's biggest rhythms, Last War aka Come Around. Jesse drops a nice Alborosie dubplate on the rhythm followed up with Collie Buddz's signature tune on it.

The mix is certainly sprinkled with big tunes from the last few years with a few lesser tunes tucked away. Things are strictly heavy weight with artists like Capleton, Tony Rebel, Sizzla and Buju dominating the lineup. It's fair to say the mix is likely intended for a wider audience rather than straight reggae academics but it sends a strong message about Jesse's style and inclinations selection wise. It’ll no doubt be a nice addition to anyone's iPod/CD rotation.

Hopefully we'll see Jesse Jahmal back in N.Z. playing dances sometime, in the mean time check the mixtape vibe!
