KING YELLOWMAN and his SAGITTARIUS BAND - Live in Vancouver - "He Can Make The Dance Ram"
When : Friday 14th September
2007.
Where : Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver,
Canada.
King Yellowman rules the dance - he has overcome major odds in life to become one of dancehalls greatest icons. Deserted by his parents, he spent his youth growing up in childrens' homes, including Maxfield Park, Alpha Boys Home and St. Marys, in Kingston, Jamaica.
Scorned for years in the dance by fellow MCs, banned from the airwaves, chased away by producers - you name it, Yellowman has been kept down. Developing skin cancer would be enough of a hurdle in life to overcome - in addition to this Yellowman was also treated differently for being albino. King Yellowman has been put to the test throughout his life, but, how he has overcome!
King Yellowman has an unmistakable deejaying style - pure niceness!!
In the early eighties he broke big with hits like I'm Getting Married in the Morning, Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt, Mad Over Me and Zungguzungguzungguzeng.
King Yellowman was the first dancehall artist to be nominated for the Grammy Awards and the first to collaborate with rap artists, including Run DMC, NWA and Public Enemy. He even scored in the Guinness Book of Records for the most produced albums in one year.
The Commodore Ballroom is located in central-downtown Vancouver and is an old refurbished classic style theatre, one floor above-ground with a huge ballroom floor. The venue capacity is around 1,400.
Yellowman was preceded by local support band, Dubfreque. Dubfreque played a very nice set with a lot of soul put into their classic covers, including songs from The Skatalites, Toots and the Maytals and a few Bob hits to boot. They had a full band and got great support from the locals.
The Sagittarius Band then took to the stage and the sound was solid. A four-piece sound - drums, bass, guitar and keys. They played one tune and the sound was booming and great.
King Yellowman came racing out, greeted the crowd and it was all on! Hit after hit of King Yellowman favourites, including Mr Chin, Morning Ride, Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt, Yellowman Getting Married, Operation Eradication, Mad Over Me, Zungguzungguzungguzeng, Who Can Make The Dance Ram, and more.
Great covers of Bam Bam and Country Road were well received by all. My favorite cover was sung by King Yellowman with crowd vocal support - Come Back Darling.
King Yellowman and his Sagittarius Band did not stop!! Tighter than tight and pure delight! King Yellowman went back and forth on the stage ramming the dance with pure energy - was almost three hours before the king of dancehall stopped.
I have wanted to see King Yellowman for sometime and I can now say - King Yellowman can make the Dance Ram!! His band are on form each and every time. Respect to them!!
