Abijah - Word of Life

10" Taitu Records Nov 2011 (Report to Me Riddim)

Taitu Records have been releasing some tuff tunes over the last  two years and have been going from strength to strength. The label was founded by Amanda Ford and were orignally based out of Brooklyn NYC, although records are now pressed in the UK and distributed out of Supertone Records in Brixton. The label is named after Empress Taitu Betul, a source of inspiration to the labels founder.

This tune was produced by Amanda Ford and mixed by Russ D. As a producer Ford describes herself as meticuous and demanding, and this attention to detail has certainly paid off in the label's releases to date. And year in year out Russ D is consistently involved with, or is releasing killer tunes, and is undoubtedly one of the UK's top engineers and producers.

The vocalist on this tune, Abijah or Ras Abijah, comes from a family with a rich musical heritage. His mother was a church singer and his father was a founding drummer with Count Ossie's Mystic Revelation of the Rastafari. His debut single 'Revelation' was a huge hit in JA.  More impressive however is his work visiting schools and universities, and his involvement in the 'Healing of the Nation Programme',  he not only talks the talk but walks the walk, to 'reach and teach'.

This rework and update of Gussie Clarke's 1989 Gregory Isaac's original is both faithful to the original riddim and adds something fresh too. Of the four cuts released this is by far my favourite, Abijah's positive and conscious vocal rides the thunderous riddim sweetly. If it hasn't already it should be coming to a sound system near you soon.
