Christine - Saturday Night

The reason I chose to showcase this track is that it's one of those records I never fail to think 'Damn, TUNE!' every time I listen to it - one of those tunes that you never get sick of or wouldn't change anything about - except for perhaps making it longer that is!

The track, originally titled One Saturday Night was first released in June 1977 on 7" with the hefty dub Saturday Night Observer Style on the B-side, as well as a 12" cut spliced into Gregory Isaacs' Rock On, to which the Christine track was a female 'reply'.

Produced by Winston 'Niney' Holness on his Observer label during his abundant mid to late 70s period, this is a BIG tune - a sweet rockin riddim under Christine's syrupy, longing vocal.  Her voice is perfectly suited to the lyrics and Christine achieves a perfect balance between sultry and sad. This tune has it all really - the genius of a slow lover's baseline, infectious melody and sad, angst-ridden lyrics.  Hurting never felt so good.

A version of the track also features on the 2002 compilation CD, Rock On: Greatest Hits From The Observer Label as well as on the 2005 Auralax album, Niney the Observer: Sufferation.  It was also released on the Observer repress 7" as in the photo.  Sweet pain.
