J-Star - Regulate Rock (7" single, white label JS018)
The latest reggae blend from J-Star is a guaranteed dancefloor filler as it fuses the signature horns from Sound Dimension's 1967 classic Studio One instrumental Rockfort Rock with vocals from Warren G & Nate Dogg's Regulate, which became a G-funk anthem in 1994.
J-Star has additional production help here from The Magic Fly (Bastard Jazz) and together they have created a mutant monster with a squelching synth bassline that even Dr Dre would be proud of. They've also added some extra vocal scats from Marlena Shaw's Woman Of The Ghetto which will instantly take you back to 1997 and Blue Boy's only big hit Remember Me, which sampled elements from the same song.
On the flip side he reworks Soldier from DJ Vadim & Big Red by grafting its high-speed French rap onto the rhythm of Junior Byles' inspired roots cover of Peggy Lee's Fever, another truly classic rhythm which was produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry and released on Byles' 1972 album Beat Down Babylon. Whilst not as immediately awe-inspiring as the A side, this one will still find favour with Francophones and Upsetter fanatics alike.

Correction: I just heard from J-Star himself to let me know that the "Woman Of The Ghetto" sample is not from the Marlena Shaw original, but is in fact from a reggae remake by Jennifer Lara which is also where that fat bassline comes from too.
