King Tubby meets Rockers Uptown

King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown is without doubt one of the crowning achievements of dub music. Released as an LP in 1977, it is a collaboration of two of the most important figures in the development of reggae: the introspective Augustus Pablo (on production duties), and the godfather of all thing dubwise - King Tubby (on the mix). The result of this collaboration is some of the deepest, most meditative dub music that has ever been produced.

The title track from the LP was originally cut with Jacob Miller's Baby I Love You So on the vocal side. The remnants of Miller's vocals are still intermittently present in Tubby's version, however with the generous application of cavernous reverb and tape delay, Miller's vocals take on a ghost-like quality. The deep meditative vibe is further augmented by the haunting minor key musings of Pablo on the melodica (an instrument that came to define his sound). The song progresses with Tubby gradually dropping tracks into the mix before letting them hazily drift off into the echo-laden abyss to expose the hypnotic bass riddim that lies beneath. This track truly exemplifies the essence of dub music.
