Kode 9 & The Space Ape ft. Chacha - Time Patrol (Hyperdub)

Hands down one of the best Hyperdub records I have heard this year. An incredibly tall order to make when picking one out of a plethora of amazing releases on one of the most forward thinking dub / electronic music labels on the planet.

Legendary producer, praised DJ and Hyperdub boss Kode 9 absolutely bashes down musical boundaries, coming with yet another flawless buy on site record.

Beginning with a smooth P-Funk, Detroit house vibe at the intro reminding me of some of DJ Hypes classic jungle stuff, Time Patrol promptly cuts to the chase with a driving syncopated rhythm flex accompanied by the poetic vocals by the Space Ape and Chacha.

There is a futuristic rhythm energy here that reminds of the grime and garage rhythms of 2004-2005 period championed by the likes of Jay Da Flex, Menta, Plastician, Vex'd and Digital Mystikz but the track is completely fresh or more importantly a quality piece of music.

There is the Time Patrol music video up online you can check out with a dark visual interpratation of the song (although a different version musically) which represents a sci fi vision of 'The Time Snatchers' - the system in which our time is broken down in to a receipt, snatched and smoked up through a cigar.

Kode 9 is consistently raising the bar each and every time with releases like this and hence putting Hyperdub still at the forefront of the experimental dub music realm. Also check out Hyperdub 5 - a compilation of releases from Hyperdub from the last five years plus some new stuff which contains Mala's epic Level Nine and a heap of classic dubs. Whole heartedly recommended.

Big up the one Space Ape - easily the most conscious voice in reggae-related audio... No banalities, no cliches, just the cold, hard truth.

hopefully Kode 9 will return to Wellington one day with Space Ape Along side.

That would be a show!
Kode 9 gig this year my easily the gig of the year for me, all things considered totally seminal. Sound system was proper built heavy and the vibe in the dark was un real.
