From Bangers R Mashed 12" - Nuff Wish Mixes Plate 6
My preoccupation with crazy reggae mash-ups has been well nourished in 2009 with the release of some great sides by Taggy Matcher, The Bombist, J-Star and Nuff Wish. The truth is, that in reality only about 10 to 15 percent of blends really work well in terms of mood, tempo and pitch, so you have to be quite ruthless in selecting only the best. This one has towered above all others in my crate this year, with it's beautiful rocksteady style harmonies and crisp, thumping digital production.
As it's one of those mash-ups where the rhythm track has been purpose-built to fit the vocal, the effective welding of old-school vocals onto new-school, state-of-the-art production is most satisfying. For legal reasons, no-one can say exactly who is responsible for the Nuff Wish remixes but it is a reasonable assumption that Roberto Cimarosti and Brian Nordhoff of G-Corp and Overproof Soundsystem are most likely the culprits.
The Melodeons in question are not even the correctly-spelt Melodians but are actually The Silvertones, specifically Keith Coley and Gilmore Grant who were captured here in rehearsal in 1974 shortly after the departure of their lead singer Delroy Denton, a distinctive baritone lead voice who went on to a brief solo career, before relocating to The States and musical obscurity.
Here they are revisiting Feel All Right, a song that they had originally cut for Bunny Lee in the 1960s, so that explains why it sounds like rocksteady. The rehearsal tape is a harmony accapella with only acoustic rhythm guitar as accompaniment which is why it was perfect for matching with a stomping rhythm track.
Although not ever meant for release, this practice session found its way onto the excellent Lee Perry anthology of rarities and out-takes Born In The Sky - Upsetter At The Controls 1969-1975 which was compiled by historian and biographer David Katz and released on Motion Records in 2001.
Most of the better reggae mash-ups have previously only been available as quite expensive and limited edition 7" and 12" imported singles, though the pirates responsible for these flagrant breaches of international copyright law are starting to realise that there is a much larger audience for these things and a few collections have recently appeared on CD.
