Formed in the early 90s out of Brooklyn, NYC by five of Denroy Morgan's children, Morgan Heritage, the 'royal family' of reggae, are going still strong after two decades in the business and are now releasing their seventh album.
The group were signed very quickly and released their debut album through MCA. Their second album, Jah Protect Us took a more rootsy direction through their pairing with King Jammy and Bobby Digital, and really showcased the groups talent. King Is Coming (Give I Strength riddim) features on this album.
Bobby Digital Dixon earned his stripes working as an engineer at
Jammy's, where he was aptly named 'Bobby Digital'. He soon set up
'Digital B', a label that voiced all the major artists during the 90s
and was at the forefront of production, being behind seminal albums such
as Shabba's Just Reality, Garnett Silk's It's Growing or
Sizzla's Black Woman n Child. Equally as comfortable with
dancehall to lovers to roots, Bobby Digital's production marks him as
one of the leading producers of the modern era.
Overall, King Is Coming is a classic piece of modern roots, and the riddim, vocals, melodies are all a perfect match. Although some of Morgan Heritage's releases have a softer feel, this drops heavy from start to finish, and also brings a conscious message.
