Old Time Something - Solo Banton

As of last week I had never heard of Solo Banton, but since downloading his tune Old Time Something from Reality Shock Records, a UK based label/booking agent, Banton's name has coincidentally come up in a few situations.

I saw NiceUp out at the Newtown Rocksteady gig and I got given a Deadly Hunta & DJ Skitz 2009 Ghetto Red Hot Tour Promo CD, that features a track called Unleash Di Fire which has Hunta and Solo Banton truly unleashing lyrical fire pon Babylon. After his name arose again during conversations on Sunday, I thought it was appropriate to do this weeks Track of the Week as Old Time Something.

Old Time Something is a tribute to reggae and related culture, paying true respect to the foundation, not only in lyrical content but also in flow, as the chorus is done in a modern rub-a-dub style. The verses are delivered at a fast pace in a very precise fashion, with the lyrics rhyming almost every second word!

However it is very easy to understand each sentence (something that can't be said for a lot of artists; it could be that his accent isn't overly thick or the fact he is isn't destroying his voice box by trying to sound like he has smoked ten blunts in a row). The riddim is a digital one, which has little bass but Banton's lyrical flow keeps you so engaged that you don't seem to notice (for me anyway)!

This tune is being released as a promo to Solo Bantons debut album Walk Like Rasta, due for release in November. Old Time Something was produced by Kris Kemist from Reality Shock Records and mixed by Dougie Wardrop of the Bush Chemists. The download also includes a version and acapella.

Solo Banton has worked with heavyweight UK sounds Mungos Hi Fi and Zion Gate Hi Fi plus many more sounds in the UK and worldwide.

Bless up.
