Sound system champion Oogun has grafted away on his sound over the years earning him a solid reputation as one of the most original DJ/producers in the New Zealand reggae and dubstep scenes.
The label Drunk Elephant Sound emerged around 2007 at the point when strong reggae influences and dubplate culture emerged in NZ dubstep. Oogun at this time championed a warm and rich palette of dubwise flavour bringing tunes like Forever Dub, Sun Ra Dub and Autobiography, which found their way into radio play lists and DJ sets from the Strictly138 crew, Jason Howson, L Que, Morning Steppa, and Tommy Flowers. Ooguns dub remix of Tiki's Burning Fire, became a favourite among reggae and dubstep fans all around the country.
Fast forward to 2010 and Oogun comes correct with a fresh new sound. Drony Dub Hall and Stylee out now on Drunk Elephant Sound feels a bit like dubwise garage and afro beat induced swing with a tuff dancehall feel. The drums are as warm and rich as the pulsing bass weight laying the foundation underneath.
Oogun absolutely nails his sound in this tune setting the blueprint for an exciting new direction for his label Drunk Elephant Sound. The equally impressive Stylee further showcases Ooguns ability to think outside the box.
You can catch Oogun showcasing his dubs and exclusive specials at the seminal Dub Wars III event in Auckland on Saturday 31 July along side Dutty Ranks, P-Vans, Future One, Undertow, Jason Howson and more.
