Put On Yuh Thong (Below The Waist) - Queen Ifrica
Penthouse Records, Continuation Riddim (D. Germain), 2004 Jamaica
With
two so-slack-sounding track titles, it would be easy to just gloss over
these in a 7"s bin. Your eye might catch that the imperially conscious
artist, Queen Ifrica, is the author of a song that looks as if it would
clash the Lady Saw or Tanya Stephens. Put On Yuh Thong however, is
actually a comment on the over-sexualisation of young women and the
lust-driven, non-committal men driving up the birth rate. It is wise
words of warning to the somewhat vulnerable.
Gun, Dog, Pusses - Tony Rebel
Similarly, Tony
Rebel looks as if he's going to launch into a bootyfest of rudebwoy
revelry and gun-clapping, but the main hook "Give thanks for Humility"
reveals the song is actually bemoaning the failings of those who preach
and don't practise, the hypocrites, and the importance of staying
humble and doing right rather than big-mouthing righteousness.
Such
accomplished artists play beautifully to the Continuation Rhythm which
is one of those happy, major and positive drops which only serve to
enhance a heavy, conscious message with their playful listenability.
Two tunes representing the cream of the Continuation Riddim crop, listen out for these!
