Satta Massagana - The Abyssinians

Satta Massagana is one of the most revered riddims in the history of Jamaican music. The riddim was originally recorded as Far Far Away by the Abyssinians in 1969 for Clement Dodd. However, because Dodd didn't believe it had any commercial potential was not heard by the masses until 1971 when the Abyssinians released it themselves as Satta Massagana. The name roughly translates to 'give thanks to God' in the Ethiopian Amharic language.

This deeply spiritual anthem was embraced by followers of the Rastafari movement and it was quickly versioned by some of the most respected names in Jamaican musicians, including Augustus Pablo, Dillinger and Third World. However in my opinion, the most classic version of this riddim has to be the Satta cut by the Rockers All-stars for the stirring opening scene of the classic 1978 film, Rockers.
