Kullar from Roots Youth's who, in between hosting an excellent weekly radio show, running a record stall all over London, and touring with his sound system, has consistently released quality roots music on his Roots Youth label for some time now. Work with It is no exception, a mid-paced, heavy steppers tune produced by Russ Disciple with Sis Nya on vocal duties.
Sis Nya has collaborated with artists such as Vivian Jones, Misty In Roots, Horace Andy, Twinkle Brothers, Lee Perry and Jah Shaka. She also has worked extensively as a vocalist on many European tours. Here she delivers a simple and conscious message to be thankful for what you've got and make the most of it.
Russ Disciples production and work needs little introduction. Whether it be fast-paced steppers or slower more driving bass lines like this, he rarely fails to deliver. I particularly like the organ intro on the track, and its a great value 12", as the B-side tunes Inspiration and its version are serious dubwise workouts.
August Town is one of three cuts of Curtis Lynch Jnr's version of Gregory Isaacs's Inner City Lady, released late last year on his Necessary Classics label. His production credits include work with the likes of Beenie Man, Mr. Vegas, Collie Buddz, Sly & Robbie along with more diverse projects such as the Gorillaz and Alica Keys, and he has selectors banging on his door for specials and dubs.
Etana, the vocalist on the track, grew up in the eastern Saint
Andrew community of August Town. In 2005, when a friend brought her to
Kingston's Fifth Element Records, she auditioned to become one of Richie
Spice's backup vocalists. She was immediately asked to join Spice's
entourage, performing throughout Europe and North America and then releasing her solo
album So Strong in 2008. Here she paints a vivid picture of
life in her home town with her sweet vocals over a heavy one-drop riddim.
