Yabby You - Conquering Lion

Yabby You - Conquering Lion - 1972

'Like a strange ting, inside a-my thoughts - like an angel a-sing', were the words spoken by Vivian Jackson, aka Yabby You, about the divine inspiration behind the tune that boosted him to the attention of the mid-70s Roots scene - Conquering Lion. It is a hypnotic devotional mantra - 'Be-you, yabby yabby you', was the chant in the song that coined Jackson's nickname.

Although Brother Naram featured Yabby's Run Come Rally as Track of the Week in 2009, it is worth honoring Vivian Jackson's contribution to a load of heavy conscious dubs: from his early debut, through to fresh contemporary remixes released on UK label Blood and Fire in recent years.

Vivian Jackson's recent departure at age 63 in January this year has stirred something in the global reggae community, with nuff tribute radio shows and blog memorials.

If you aren't familiar with the musical legacy left by Yabby, I recommend starting with the album Yabby You - Jesus Dread 1972-1977, released in 1997. Follow that with the Groove Corporation Remix of Conquering Lion, and you'll have a full belly of appreciation of the depth, range and talent that Yabby You was famed for throughout his life, and certainly in his death.

RIP Yabby You.

Love how they misspelt his name on the cover. Just noticed. Bless.

"Conquering Lion" single was released late in 1972, credited to 'Vivian Jackson and the Ralph Brothers'.
Cut for King Tubby, the popularity of the song and its distinctive introduction (the chant of "Be-you, yabby-yabby-you") earned Jackson the nickname "Yabby You", which has remained with him during his entire career.

Thanks for Jah Message RasTa
RIP Yabby-U
